CONFRONTATION

Raw Power and Emotion of the Tienta

This visceral interpretation of the traditional “tienta” ritual captivates with its raw, emotional energy. Where the previous rendering evoked elegance and drama, this version embraces a more expressionistic style, amplifying the intensity of the encounter.

The painting’s composition immediately draws the viewer into the fray. The bull, rendered in a riot of bold reds and deep maroons, charges forth with an almost tangible ferocity. Its muscles ripple beneath the surface, the textures emphasized through thick, gestural brushstrokes that give the beast a sense of tangible, physical presence.

Facing the bull is the mounted tester, executed in a swirling flurry of whites, blues, and grays. The horse rears up, its rider’s cape billowing dramatically, creating a visual counterpoint to the bull’s forceful advance. The figures are not merely depicted, but rather seem to emanate from the canvas, their movements captured in a state of perpetual motion.

The background, rendered in a hazy, atmospheric palette, serves to heighten the sense of drama. Hints of spectators can be discerned, their forms reduced to silhouettes that lend an air of voyeuristic intensity to the scene. The muted tones create a sense of timelessness, as if this confrontation could be taking place in any era.

What truly sets this work apart, however, is the visceral, emotional impact it evokes. The artist has abandoned the more polished realism of the previous painting in favor of a raw, expressive approach. The brushstrokes are bold and unapologetic, the colors vibrant and unyielding. This is not a mere representation of a cultural ritual, but rather a visceral distillation of the primal forces at play.

Through this dynamic interpretation, the viewer is compelled to confront the inherent tension and danger of the tienta. The bull’s sheer power and the rider’s daring create a palpable sense of suspense, as if the outcome could unfold at any moment. The work challenges the viewer to engage with the scene on a deeper level, to feel the thrum of adrenaline and the weight of mortality that hangs in the balance.

In the end, “Confrontation” stands as a bold and unapologetic exploration of the human condition. It is a work that embraces the raw, the visceral, and the emotionally charged, inviting the viewer to bear witness to a timeless struggle between man and beast, courage and fear, life and death.

STORY

BEHIND SERIES OF PAINTINGS

CIVILION BLOG

While researching Civilón’s life, I began exploring the cultural and traditional aspects of bullfighting for the first time. I encountered historical gaps – moments where the details of Civilón’s fate were unclear. Rather than aiming for documentary accuracy, I allowed these blank spaces to play a part during the creation of sketches. My paintings don’t aim to provide a historical documentary but rather offer an interpretation of the story, simplified into essential subjects and emotions.
